Swim Lessons & Aquatics Programs

The goal of YMCA Swim Lessons is to develop our core values of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility.  The teaching methods used are designed to assist participants in perfecting skills to the best of their ability.  Students will also build self-esteem, meet new friends, and of course have FUN!

 

Teen & Adult Swim Lessons

For all teens and adults who are looking to learn or improve basic swimming skills in a fun way.  Gain confidence at your own pace.  All levels welcome!

AGES: 13 years & up

TIME: Thursday 6:15 - 7:00pm

FEES:
Members $20
Non-Members $50

Private Swim Lessons

Individualized instruction for all skill levels, at any age.  Call our Aquatics Coordinator to schedule your swim time.

FEES:
Members $15 (30 min lesson); $35 (45 min lesson)
Non-Members $35 (30 min lesson); $55 (45 min lesson)

Parent/Child & Preschool Lessons

SEA TURTLE (6 mo – 3 yrs)  

In this water adjustment program, instructors guide parents in teaching children safety and aquatic skills. Parents accompany children at all times. Prerequisite:  Able to control head movement and be at least 6 months old.

 

SEA LION (6 mo – 3 yrs)

In this advanced water adjustment program, instructors guide parents in teaching body position, blowing bubbles, floating and safety and aquatic skills. Parents accompany children at all times. Prerequisite:  Comfortable in water and walk 3 steps independently.

 

SEA HORSE (6 mo – 3 yrs)

This class teaches water safety, paddle strokes, kicking, blowing bubbles with face in the water and floating.  The class serves as a transition from parent/child to preschool lessons.  Parents begin in the water until their child becomes more independent. Prerequisite:  Jump on cue (on land).

 

PIKE (3 – 5 yrs)

Introduces little swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits in a fun and encouraging environment. Pikes focus on basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, blowing bubbles in the water, floating and pool safety. Prerequisite: 3 years old or completion of Seahorse.

 

EEL (3 – 5 yrs)

This class is for little swimmers who are well-adjusted to the water and eager to learn more! Eel swimmers continue to build upon Pike skills, such as kicking and progressive paddle stroke. They also learn more about pool safety and develop floating skills.  Prerequisite: Pass Pike skills.

 

RAY (3 – 5 yrs)

This class is for swimmers who are ready to begin developing endurance as well as improving stroke skills. Rays are taught treading water, rhythmic breathing, and rescue skills. They also learn more about personal water safety.  Prerequisite: Pass Eel skills.

 

STARFISH  (3 – 5 yrs)

This advanced class is for swimmers who pass Ray level but are still in preschool. Swimmers review previous skills, personal safety, rescue skills, and work on refining their strokes. They also learn underwater swimming skills.  Prerequisite: Pass Ray skills.

School Age Lessons

POLLIWOG (6 – 12 yrs)
This beginning level for school age children helps acquaint them with the pool and adjust to the water. Swimmers learn front and back floating skills, paddle stroke, personal safety, and the use of flotation devices. Prerequisite: 6 years old or completion of Pike and/ or Eel.
 
GUPPY (6 – 12 yrs)
These swimmers continue to build their skills practicing paddle stroke skills, floating, and rotary breathing without the aid of flotation devices. Children learn treading water, survival floating, and lead-up strokes to the front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Prerequisite: Pass Polliwog or pass Ray and/ or Starfish.
 
MINNOW (6 – 12 yrs)
Swimmers continue to refine their lead-up stroke skills and develop endurance by swimming 25 yards of refined front crawl and backstroke. Prerequisite: Pass Guppy or equivalent skills.
 
FISH (6+ yrs)
Swimmers refine front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. The butterfly stroke is also introduced. Fish swimmers continue to build endurance by swimming up to 50 yards. Prerequisite: Pass Minnow or equivalent skills.
 
FLYING FISH (6+ yrs)
Swimmers in this advanced level focus on stroke enhancements and more endurance. Open turns and treading water with a rotary kick are introduced at this level. Prerequisite: Pass Fish or equivalent skills.
 
SHARK/PORPOISE (6+ yrs)

Swimmers focus on perfecting their strokes and increasing endurance with open and flip turns. Swimmers are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, the trudgen crawl and the over-arm sidestroke.  Prerequisite: Pass Flying Fish or equivalent skills.

Have fun playing different sports in the pool!  Learn and play inner tube water polo, water volleyball and more.

Junior Lifeguarding Workshop

A water rescue training camp for youth ages 11-14. Must be able to swim front crawl 50 yards continously, tread water for a minute, and swim 10 feet under water. Fun activities in and out of the water; also earn credit towards our summer junior lifeguarding program. Snacks will be provided.


AGES: 11 to 14 years

TIME: Sunday, March 14 4:30 - 6:30pm and Sunday, April 11 4:30 - 6:30pm
